People Magazine and Great Place to Work have named mid-Atlantic convenience-store chain Sheetz No. 9 on this year’s Companies that Care list. This is the highest ranking Sheetz has achieved on the list. It is the fourth time in five years that Sheetz has been on the list, and Sheetz is the only convenience-store chain to be ranked, the Altoona, Pennsylvania-based retailer said.

The annual ranking, now in its eighth year, highlights the top companies in the United States that have succeeded in business while also demonstrating outstanding respect, care and concern for their employees and communities.

  • Sheetz is No. 13 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.

“Giving back and helping those we serve is at the forefront of everything we do. That is why being included on this list is something we are not taking for granted,” said Travis Sheetz, president and CEO of Sheetz. “We are truly honored to be ranked ninth on this list, standing alongside some of the leading companies in the country that prioritize the well-being of their communities.”

Eighty-eight percent of employees surveyed at Sheetz said it was a great place to work, compared to 57% of employees at a typical U.S.-based company, Sheetz said. Also, 91% of Sheetz employees feel good about the ways the company contributes to the community.

Sheetz works with charitable organizations like the Special Olympics, which it has supported for more than 30 years through financial contributions, product donations and event volunteers. Sheetz also makes weekly food donations to local food banks. And Sheetz For the Kidz, an employee-driven non-profit organization, has helped more than 170,000 children in need celebrate the holidays, the company said.

“What these companies prove is that taking care of your workforce is an investment—not a cost,” said Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work. “And companies that do it the right way will reap the benefits: more engagement, faster innovation and a healthy bottom line.”

This year’s Companies that Care rankings were based on more than 1.3 million employee survey responses and data from companies representing more than 8.2 million employees. Of those surveys, more than 1 million came from employees at companies eligible for this year’s list, and the rankings are based on that feedback.

“Companies like Sheetz Inc. (No. 9) stood out with programs like its ‘store team helper’ role, which offers individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities meaningful employment at its convenience store locations,” People said.
