Wawa to Break Ground in West Virginia

Construction on convenience-store chain’s first site in state to begin Aug. 14

Wawa is expanding to Inwood, West Virginia, the first store in the convenience-store chain’s 14th state. It will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 14.

  • Wawa is No. 10 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by total number of company-owned stores.

It will be located about 175 miles from the company's base in Wawa, Pennsylvania.

At the groundbreaking event, Wawa will share more details on locations, expansion plans, community investment and the timeline to opening its doors in new locations.

The event will host the following attendees:

  • John Poplawski, vice president and chief real estate officer, Wawa
  • Mandy Wynne, director of store operations, Wawa
  • Chris Maccubbin, area manager, Wawa
  • State and local officials
  • WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network representatives
  • Wawa’s mascot, Wally Goose

The event will also include:

  • Local officials with hardhats and shovels in hand breaking ground, plus the unveiling of a “Coming Soon” sign.
  • Food samples of hoagies, pretzels, smoothies, snacks, Wawa teas and lemonades.
  • Remarks from Wawa leadership, state and local officials and charity partners.
  • Check presentations to local charity partners.
  • Wawa’s mascot, Wally Goose, interacting with attendees.

Additionally, Wawa expects to open six convenience stores in Georgia and five c-stores in Florida. It also announced 10 new c-stores in North Carolina this year, about 40 new c-stores in North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana in 2025 and as many as 250 c-stores within the next five to 10 years in the states. 

Wawa has approximately 1,050 locations open in eight states, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and Alabama, as well as Washington, D.C.
