Subway's 2005

Opened 177 units in c-stores, truckstops

MILFORD, Conn. -- The Subway restaurant chain said it opened more than 2,400 new locations around the world, including 818 inside Wal-Mart stores, and 177 locations inside convenience stores, truckstops and travel centers, bringing us to a total of 24,800 open and operating outlets in 83 countries.

By year's end, the chain also added nearly 900 entrepreneurs to its list of franchisees. And at an average of 48 new locations per week, it reached the milestone of 25,000 locations in late January 2006.

During 2005, the chain reached [image-nocss] a number of other significant milestones, including the opening of its 5,000th international location. In addition, Subway crossed the 2,000 mark in Canada.

Domestically, the Subway chain reached the milestones of 19,000 units, 1,700 in California; 1,400 in Texas; 1,100 in Florida; 900 in New York, Illinois and Ohio; 800 in Michigan; 700 in Pennsylvania; 600 in Georgia and North Carolina; 300 in Massachusetts; and 100 in Idaho.

With minimal equipment needs and space requirements that it said are very flexible, Subway reached the milestone of 5,300 nontraditional locations in areas such as airports, amusement parks, college campuses, and c-stores. There are now more than 3,200 Subway restaurants in c-stores, truckstops and travel centers worldwide.

In December, the Subway chain opened 176 new locations. December U.S. c-store/truckstop/travel center units include:
