CHICAGO  Here’s an idea retailers can easily grasp: Convenience-store retailers should consider creating a sweepstakes featuring a simple game on their website to generate publicity and collect cellphone numbers to broaden the marketing push.

Laval, Quebec-based Circle K is doing just that right now in a promotion called Rock Paper Prizes, which has 30,000 winners daily and runs until July 1. The game is, of course, based on Rock Paper Scissors, the hand game that dates to China around 200 BC.

After entering and verifying a cellphone number, a user can begin play immediately, once per day. Each game is a best-of-three competition, user versus computer, and prizes include foodservice offers such as buy-one, get-one medium or large Froster. Prizes are stored in an online wallet.

There are two grand prizes of $10,000 as well as instant-win prizes, which include other foodservice items such as coffee, roller grill items and pizza—as well as money off on fuel.

The game keeps Circle K top of mind for participants for nearly two months, the length of the promotion, on a daily basis.
