More Cluck for Your Buck'

BP's ampm debuting new, bigger chicken sandwich
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Retailer ampm is rolling out a new "bigger, better" chicken sandwich at participating BP and ARCO ampm convenience stores across the country on May 13. Besides having a more "sweet yet savory" taste, the new sandwich includes a patty that is 33% bigger than the old one, but will retail at the same suggested price of $1.29 for the first two months of the product launch.

Customers can take advantage of the "More Cluck for Your Buck" promotion by visiting participating ampm locations on May 20 to receive a free sample as well as a coupon for a 20-oz. fountain [image-nocss] drink.

"We spent almost two years developing the right combination of seasoning, such as a hint of onion and garlic, to make the chicken sandwich even more flavorful," said Andrew Baird, BP's vice president of marketing for convenience retail. "In addition, customers told us that they wanted a more southern-style sandwich, which meant adding a little sweetness as well."

Besides a bolder taste, the new chicken sandwich features other enhancements. The patty is made from all-white meat and weighs 4 oz. instead of the previous 3-oz. patty. The patty is served in a hot, fresh sesame-seed bun and packaged in a new wrapper.

Samples of the new chicken sandwich will be available at participating ampm locations from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on May 20. Samples will be one-third of a regular sandwich. The free sample will be available at participating stores for a limited time while supplies last. Customers are limited to one sample each.

Radio ads announcing the "More Cluck for Your Buck" promotion, which includes a coupon for a 20-oz. fountain drink, will run all day on May 18 and 19 as well as the morning of May 20.

Also, fans at select Major League Baseball games will receive coupons that they can use to buy the new sandwich for $1 at participating ampm locations. Cell-phone users who have opted into ampm's "text alert" program will also receive the $1 coupon.

The ampm brand was founded in 1978 in Southern California by ARCO, which was acquired by BP in 2000. ARCO-branded ampm stores are currently found in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Arizona; BP-branded ampm stores are located in Chicago, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Orlando, Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Atlanta. BP supplies more than 15 billion gallons of gasoline every year to U.S. consumers through 12,000 retail outlets. BP is the single, global brand formed by the combination of the former British Petroleum, Amoco Corp., Atlantic Richfield (ARCO), ARAL and Burmah Castrol.
