As previously reported in Tobacco E-News, the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products issued “civil money penalty complaints” against 20 retailers for various alleged violations, including selling tobacco products to a minor; failing to verify the age of customers that are 27 years old or younger by requesting photo identification; and/or having self-service displays of cigarettes, roll-your-own or smokeless tobacco products in the store, without ensuring that a minor is not present or permitted to enter the store at any time.
According to the FDA’s website, as of January 30, 2012, the FDA has now issued civil money penalty complaints against a total of 29 retailers for alleged violations of the federal tobacco regulations. The fines being sought by the FDA against these 29 retailers range from $250 up to $5,000.
