GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Despite seeing that regular, everyday consumer in your store for his pack of cigarettes week after week, he may suddenly disappear for a better price down the street. Two-thirds of cigarette buyers are willing to switch stores for better prices on their regular brands, according to a new study revealed at Winsight’s 2017 Convenience Retailing University (CRU) conference in Glendale, Ariz.
Showing attendees data from Altria Group Distribution Co.’s Understanding the Adult Tobacco Consumer study, Krister Hampton, manager of trade relations for Richmond, Va.-based Altria, said top requirements for cigarette customers’ regular brands include good prices, always in stock, always “fresh,” special offers and convenient location.
