Retailer to continue sponsorship of San Angelo Symphony fireworks display

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Stripes convenience stores will uphold the tradition Town & Country c-stores kept going for years by sponsoring the fireworks extravaganza at the San Angelo Symphony's annual July 3 Pops Concert, the San Angelo Standard Times said.

"Stripes' continuous support for San Angelo's largest event is a vital part in keeping this event moving forward," Del Velasquez, chairman for the concert, told the newspaper. "It is with great appreciation that Stripes helps bring this celebration to fruition."

The free concert and fireworks display, [image-nocss] held at the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial RiverStage, celebrates Independence Day and honors the military. It draws thousands of people every year, and is the fourth largest such celebration in Texas, according to the report.

"The event is the biggest draw for San Angelo," Charlotte Lewis, new executive director of the San Angelo Symphony, told the paper. "Both sides of the river fill up and people sit in nearby parking lots to hear the concert."

The concert includes historic cannons from Fort Concho, military pageantry, fireworks and patriotic music from the San Angelo Symphony directed by Hector Guzman, the report said.

Stripes Convenience Stores is owned by Susser Holding Corp., which purchased the chain of Town & Country convenience stores in 2007.

"Traditionally, [Town & Country has] been the overall title sponsor," Velasquez added. Multi-Chem this year has taken on the main sponsorship for the event, he said, but "Stripes chose to continue to support the symphony" by sponsoring the fireworks for the evening.

Velasquez said the fireworks display can cost from $10,000 to $20,000 depending on the types of pyrotechnics used.
