Rutter's 2011 Tally

Chain's charitable giving topped $320,000

YORK, Pa. -- Rutter's Farm Stores made charitable donations to several community organizations, which totaled more than $320,000 in 2011, the company recently reported.

"In economies as tough as this one, charities need the financial support of the business community more than ever," said Rutter's CEO, Scott Hartman.

In April, Rutter's hosted its 9th annual golf outing, benefiting Rutter's Children's Charities at Regent's Glen Golf Course. The two-day outing raised more than $95,000. The Hanover, Pa., YMCA used the donation received from Rutter's to establish the Rutter's Youth Fitness Room, which is the only youth-centered fitness room in the area. The Make-a-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia used the Rutter's donation to grant the wishes of 10 area children.

In May, Rutter's celebrated the opening of its 56th convenience store in Fayetteville, Franklin County by donating to three charities.

The Mont Alto Volunteer Fire Company used the donated funds to purchase food and toys for the company's annual Christmas drive. The Chambersburg-area Salvation Army replenished and stocked wares to be given to those in need at the chapter's food bank. The Fayetteville Athletic Association, which is funded entirely by donations, provides ball fields for 220 kids as well as adult baseball programs and pavilions that can be used by the community free of charge.

"We believe these donations have made a lasting impact on the organizations that receive them and those who've benefitted from them," said Hartman.

Rutter's has made significant donations to several other local charities throughout the year, in total:

  • Rutter's collaborated with York College of Pennsylvania to form the Rutter's Scholar Program, which awards academic scholarships to eligible students to attend York College's high school affiliate, York Country Day School.
  • The York County Public Library received $50,000 to provide 2 years of free Internet access at computers throughout the library system.
  • The Dover-area YMCA used the contribution they received from Rutter's to support the group's early childhood educations programs, including scholarships for those in need.
  • Rutter's continued its sponsorship of the "Going Green" initiative by Junior Achievement of Central Pennsylvania. Additionally, the donation funded a brand new program within JA Biztown, Planet Earth, which focuses on environmental issues. Junior Achievement fosters work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills through experiential learning to inspire kids to dream big and reach their potential.
  • The Crispus Attucks Association of York, which is a comprehensive, non-profit, entity that provides education service, human services, community development and affordable housing and enhances the quality of life for the diverse population of York.

Rutter's has been active in the local community since its beginning in 1921. Now, 90 years later and under the family's third generation of leadership, Rutter's has expanded the dairy's interests to include Maryland and New Jersey in addition to Pennsylvania, and operates 56 convenience stores throughout Central Pennsylvania with Scott Hartman as president and CEO, Todd Rutter as president of Rutter's Dairy and Tim Rutter as president of M&G Realty.
