Casey's, Hy-Vee Honored by Salvation Army

C-store retailer, grocer sponsored honor flights for vets

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Casey's General Stores Inc. and Hy-Vee Inc. have received the "Doing the Most Good" Awards from the Salvation Army in Des Moines, Iowa. The two central Iowa-based companies have underwritten the Central Iowa Honor Flights that have taken 1,200 World War II veterans to Washington, D.C.,to visit their memorial and other sites. The awards were presented at the annual meeting of the Salvation Army in Des Moines last week.

Early in the fund raising efforts for the honor flights, Hy-Vee stepped forward to underwrite the first flight on August 11. Casey's [image-nocss] underwrote two honor flights on October 13 and a few days later Hy-Vee announced that the company would support another flight on November 3.

The Salvation Army's "Doing the Most Good" Award recognizes organizations or individuals who have indeed done the most good for our community. "Doing the Most Good" has for several years been The Salvation Army's national branding slogan.

As reported in CSP Daily News, On October 13, 500 veterans, caregivers and volunteers boarded two 747 jets, funded by Casey's General Stores Inc., for a one-day Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Casey's donated $250,000 to charter the first jet, and later added a second one to allow more veterans to make the trip.

Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey's operates approximately 1,475 convenience stores in Iowa and six other states.

Hy-Vee, West Des Moines, Iowa, operates approximately 220 grocery stores, some offering gasoline, in seven Midwest states.
