Beginning a New Quest

FuelQuest founder Cilento steps down, Tormollen steps in
HOUSTON -- Rich Cilento has stepped down as president and CEO of FuelQuest Inc., a company he founded nearly a decade ago to help those in the downstream-petroleum sector simplify the complexities, regulation and market volatility of the fuel business. Matt Tormollen, a software-industry veteran who joined the company in 2007, has been anointed to oversee all daily operations, while Cilento will remain as a strategic advisor.

"Rich Cilento was our founder and has been involved with driving this company for nine, going on 10 years now," Tormollen, the new president and CEO, told [image-nocss] CSP Daily News. "Rich is confident we have the ability to drive forward and execute on his vision. We're lucky to have him involved in the long term."

Tormollen, 43, joined FuelQuest a year ago as executive vice president to head up the company's Fuel Management System business. Before joining FuelQuest, he spent 23 years in the software industry, where he gained expertise in energy, transportation and environmental compliance. Most recently he worked for Pavilion Technologies, a startup firm from Austin, Texas, that specialized in biofuels optimization production that has since been acquired by Rockwell Software.

"In terms of the impact on customers, one of the things we get complimented on is our great customer service, and none of that will change," Tormollen said. "There will be no operational changes; this is simply a progression from a leadership standpoint."

FuelQuest has been spending a lot of time "aligning its people and processes" in order to implement changes in its technology that will help "visualize and measure the value customers get from our application that shows both us and the customer how we're doing," Tormollen said.

Cilento will continue to serve FuelQuest as chairman of a newly created advisory board. Beyond chairing the board, it is not yet clear what the future holds for Cilento.

The board will "pull together folks from within the industry, and take a look at our total ecosystem," said Tormollen. The board will include members of the carrier, supplier and retailer sectors, though Tormollen could not share exactly who would serve on the board with Cilento. He said only, "Those calls are being made now."

"This is another step forward for us," Tormollen said, "and to have Rich chair [the board], it means continuity, and it will make sure we're on the path he always intended from a vision standpoint. The vision moving forward for us, among other things, is striving to improve the fuel margin for our retail customers."

FuelQuest provides on-demand, Web-based supply-chain management and tax-automation technologies for suppliers, distributors, buyers, and traders of petroleum products and other energy commodities. FuelQuest solutions deliver operational and financial value to more than 750 customers, including some of the biggest names in the convenience-store sector, such as 7-Eleven and Chevron.
