AFPD to Present $36,000 in Scholarships

23 students honored by retail group

DETROIT -- The Associated Food & Petroleum Dealers Foundation (AFPD Foundation) will present the 23 students winners of the 2010 AFPD Foundation Scholarship Program with $1,500 each at a special luncheon at the Detroit Institute of Arts on August 3. The AFPD serves as the voice of the retail food, beverage and fuel industries in Michigan and Ohio.

This year the AFPD Foundation will distribute $36,000 to 23 deserving students who are currently attending an accredited public or private college or university or beginning their education this fall. Selection criteria included [image-nocss] past academic performance, leadership, and participation in school and community activities as well as current college grades. Selection of the winners was made by an independent committee at International Scholarship and Tuition Services (ISTS).

At the Joseph D. Sarafa Annual Scholarship Luncheon, scholars will meet each other, their sponsors, and the AFPD Foundation Board. In addition, a DIA docent will address the students, parents, and guests and share background and highlights of the exhibits. "The selection of the DIA as the site for this year's scholarship luncheon will inspire the students and help them realize that with education and hard work, they can achieve their dreams," said Auday Arabo, COO of AFPD.

The Joseph D. Sarafa Annual Scholarship Luncheon was established to honor the legacy of Joseph D. Sarafa, a former AFPD Foundation chair under whose leadership the Foundation was established. More than $800,000 in contributions has been raised for the Foundation since its inception.

The AFPD Foundation receives numerous annual donations from AFPD members, companies, and individuals who generously contribute for the welfare of tomorrow's leaders. "Together with our generous sponsors, we will continue to recognize and help outstanding young men and women for many years to come," said Jane Shallal, president of the AFPD Foundation. "These students are pursuing a wide spectrum of goals, and we hope the Foundation scholarships will help meet their financial needs."Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, AFPD lobbies on behalf of independent retailers and helping its members remain competitive. AFPD has kept the industry connected and progressive by publishing trade information, offering ongoing training and business development, as well as sponsoring cost-saving programs to help the industry cut expenses and boost efficiency.
