DEERFIELD, Ill. -- On January 20, Mondelez International Inc. revealed its latest limited-edition Oreo cookie flavor: Red Velvet. While line extensions have offered many filling flavors, this new variety features a completely new cookie flavor and color for the first time since the debut of the Golden Oreo in 2004.
Red Velvet Oreos, made with a red chocolate cookie and a cream cheese-flavored crème, will become available nationwide starting February 2, the company told CSP Daily News.
It will be sold at U.S. stores for at least six weeks or while supplies last, according to a Bloomberg report.
The snack maker developed the new product over more than a year, and said it hopes to win over foodies and cupcake fanatics, the report said.
Mondelez's Nabisco began selling vanilla-flavored golden Oreos in 2004, straying from chocolate cookies for the first time since the snack was invented in 1912. Red Velvet Oreos, hitting shelves in time for Valentine's Day, will test U.S. consumers' appetite for a flavor that has gained a following in recent years, said the report.
"We've seen consumers really getting fanatical about the flavor of red velvet cake," Janda Lukin, senior director for Oreo North America at Mondelez, told the news agency. "We think it stays true to who we are as Oreo but can also really satisfy those folks who are red velvet fanatics."
