Bite-size? Shareable? What about products that morph into something new? These are all factors that play a role in the world of confection today.

Big candy sales are likely to come to convenience stores in small bites this year. Bagged hand-to-mouth candy offers retailers tremendous growth opportunity in the coming months.

Candy overall had a semi-sweet year in 2013, with chocolate posting a 1.4% increase in convenience store unit sales. Larger package sizes—3.5 ounces and greater—saw units up nearly 12%.

While there is a lot of buzz about bite-size and shareable packages that pace chocolate and nonchocolate growth, compelling developments also include products that morph into completely new forms.
