7-Eleven is the most-trusted grocer in the convenience-store channel, according to the 2023 Most Trusted Grocery Retailers in America list.

Circle K, Laval, Quebec; Wawa, Wawa, Pennsylvania; Casey’s, Ankeny, Iowa; and QuikTrip, Tulsa, Oklahoma; followed the Irving, Texas-based c-store chain in rankings No. 2 through 5.

The fifth-annual ranking comes from Toronto-based market research firm BrandSpark International, conducted in partnership with CSP’s sister publication Winsight Grocery Business.

Trust plays an integral role in consumers’ decision on where to shop, especially during inflationary times, BrandSpark said. There’s a risk that if customers switch retailers now, they may not return when the cost-of-living pressures ease.

“This is an important moment for retailers to build trust with shoppers, and they can do so by communicating why they are trusted and how they plan to help Americans through this,” said Adam Bellisario, associate vice president of BrandSpark Most Trusted Awards.

The ranking surveyed more than 10,000 U.S. shoppers about their most-trusted food retailers in a variety of categories, including convenience, grocery and dollar stores.

Walmart was named the most-trusted conventional grocer while Aldi was chosen as the most-trusted discount and small-format grocer. The most important drivers of grocer trust included affordability, store brand/private-label products, fresh produce and an enjoyable in-store experience.

Dollar store retailers like Dollar General and Dollar Tree had the highest shopper reach increase in 2022—with Dollar General topping the list as the most-trusted dollar store chain.
