MACS Makes Mark

Adds new leadership with vets from GPM, 7-Eleven, Spinx, Wawa; revamps logo
RICHMOND, Va. -- Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores LLC (MACS), a leading convenience store operator in the Mid-Atlantic region and one of ExxonMobil's largest consortiums of retailers in the United States, has added five new members to its leadership team: Jim Summers, president and COO; Don Bassell, CFO; Mike Squillace, senior vice president of operations; Adam Marcus, senior vice president of wholesale fuels; and Neil McCarthy, senior vice president and chief information officer.

"Our extraordinarily talented leadership team draws on the experience of the finest professionals [image-nocss] in the c-store industry," said Steve Uphoff, CEO of MACS and founder of Uppy's Convenience Stores. "I am confident they will not only lead MACS to greater growth, but also that their business experience will be an asset to the Richmond community."

With 13 years in the convenience store industry, as well as his most recent role as director of pro and tool rental with The Home Depot, Summers brings insight to the strategic planning and operations process. As president and COO, he will oversee all aspects of day-to-day business operations and internal functions.

For the past seven years, Bassell has been the CFO of GPM Investments LLC, which operates under the brand names of Fas Mart and Shore Stop. With more than 25 years of experience in the c-store industry, Bassell has held various accounting, treasury and MIS positions with Mobil, Amoco and Tenneco.

Squillace was recently an integral member of the leadership teams at C.L. Thomas Inc., a multi-state wholesale fuel distributor and c-store retailer based in Victoria, Texas, and at 7-Eleven Inc. He will oversee operations for the company's network of approximately 300 company-owned and dealer stores.

Marcus' responsibilities include leading and developing strong partnerships for MACS' wholesale fuel business, as well as spearheading strategic procurement and fleet operations. Prior to joining MACS, Marcus was the vice president of fuels for The Spinx Co. and served 14 years with BP/Amoco in the United States.

McCarthy's responsibilities include IT strategic development and deployment of technology solutions. McCarthy has 25 years of experience in the c-store industry and was formerly the CIO at Wawa Inc.

Meanwhile, MACS has unveiled its new identity mark, a yellow-and-blue logo that features a stylish shield with a roadway that curves towards a rising sun.

"We wanted to create a memorable logomark that captures our company's core concentration--a focus on the energy and travel segments that are at the heart of our convenience store and wholesale fuel business units," said Summers. "This is the beginning of a new campaign to build the MACS brand as we pursue rapid expansion in 2011."

MACS is a leading convenience store operator in the Mid-Atlantic region and one of the largest ExxonMobil-branded wholesalers in the United States. Initially formed in mid-2010, MACS was created by Greenwich, Conn.-based Catterton Partners, a leading North American consumer-focused private-equity firm, to acquire convenience stores in the highly fragmented convenience store industry.

In June 2010, MACS acquired a majority interest in Uppy's Convenience Stores Inc., and 170 convenience stores/fuel stations from ExxonMobil. Currently, Richmond, Va.-based MACS is comprised of approximately 300 company-owned and dealer retail locations throughout Maryland and Virginia, in addition to its wholesale fuel distribution network.(Click here for previous CSP Daily News coverage of MACS.)
