Kwik Trip Moves to Pre-Pay Only at Pump

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Beginning next year, Kwik Trip is switching to pre-payment only at its fuel dispensers.

The change goes into effect for all Kwik Trip convenience stores starting Jan. 3, 2022.

“We are moving to prepay to improve our guest service,” said David Niemi, a company spokesperson, told the Wisconsin State Journal. “Our co-workers spend so much time watching the fuel islands for drive-offs, they can’t focus solely on the guests in the stores.”

An exception is for side-diesel islands where customers can still use the pay-inside option,  Niemi said.

Today, many Kwik Trip stores allow customers to pump their fuel before they pay, allowing customers to shop in the interim. The update to the rules will restrict customers to either pay at the dispenser before entering the store to make a separate transaction or shop inside and prepay for gas along with their in-store purchases.

The shift to pre-payment only will not affect many of Kwik Trip’s customers in and around Madison, as it has already required prepayment at many of its Dane County stores for years, according to the report.

La Crosse, Wis.-based Kwik Trip is a family-owned company that serves customers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa with 768 convenience stores under the Kwik Trip and Kwik Star banners and produces more than 80% of the products featured in the stores, supplied by its own commissary, bakery, dairy and distribution center in La Crosse.
