Ill. Gov. Puts AG on Gouging Watch

Blago asks Madigan to investigate possible Katrina-related abuses

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Governor Rod Blagojevich is asking the Illinois attorney general to look into possible price gouging at Illinois gas stations, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The governor acknowledged that Hurricane Katrina will probably hurt domestic oil production and that will cause prices to spike. But Blagojevich said it is important to make sure that unscrupulous people do not take advantage of the situation to exploit consumers.

He said gasoline prices are high enough already, so he urged Attorney General [image-nocss] Lisa Madigan to watch to make sure price gouging is not going on.

The governor also renewed his call on President Bush to help bring down the cost of gasoline by releasing additional oil supplies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
