Philly 7-Elevens Recognized for Veggie Food on the Go

PETA honors chain with "Proggy" award

PHILADELPHIA -- For providing delicious, nutritious, and cruelty-free food to vegans and vegetarians in a hurry, 7-Eleven stores in Philadelphia have won the Most Vegetarian-Friendly Convenience Store category in People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA's) sixth annual Proggy Awards. ("Proggy" stands for "progress.")

7-Eleven will receive a framed certificate and will be featured on PETA's website www.PETA.org. PETA's Proggy Awards recognize animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture, the group said.

Many Philadelphia 7-Elevens already feature [image-nocss] a variety of veggie sandwiches, including faux-chicken, seitan steak, falafel, and tofu-egg salad varieties, from local sandwichmaker Moshe's, and soon all area stores will carry them, according to PETA. While it is increasingly simple to find vegetarian offerings at many stores and restaurants, 7-Eleven is making it even easier for conscientious consumers to grab a bite on the go.

"With the addition of veggie options to all Philly stores, 7-Eleven has made it a snap for compassionate people to find food that's tasty, convenient, and cruelty-free," said PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. "Now, even busy folks in the 'City of Brotherly Love' can show a little love to animals while improving their own health."

This year, Proggy Awards have gone to producers and marketers of vegan foods, leather-free shoes and cruelty-free personal-care products; an animal-friendly production studio; and a member of Congress.
