Casey's Continues Remodeling to Larger Format

Expanding coffee bars, adding beer vaults, self-serve ice cream, made-to-order subs

ANKENY, Iowa -- Casey's General Stores Inc., which in March again began moving ahead with its store expansion and remodeling project after a brief hiatus (see Related Content below for previousCSP Daily News coverage) to evaluate the program, is expanding its coffee bars and adding beer vaults, self-serve ice cream and made-to-order sub sandwiches at its stores, said The State Journal-Register.

"We're kind of pushing it out and seeing where it works," Bill Walljasper, senior vice president and chief financial officer for Casey's, told the newspaper, which reported on the expansion of a store in Chatham, Ill., one of the first in the region to benefit from the program.

About 300 stores already have switched to the larger format, the report said.

Casey's has aggressively expanded since surviving the hostile takeover bid less than two years ago by Canadian convenience store chain Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., Laval, Quebec. Casey's shareholders ultimately rejected the bid (click here for previouscoverage).

The company steadily has added stores and services since, including the 2010 acquisition of 19 stores from Springfield, Ill.-based Harper on the Way (see Related Content below), said the report.

Based in Ankeny, Iowa, Casey's is a leading independently owned convenience store chain in the Midwest and one of the largest in the country. As of Jan. 31, 2012, the company owned and operated 1,686 stores in 11 states.
