Weigel's New Knoxville Store is Chain's 60th

Company has hired real-estate director to expand retail footprint

POWELL, Tenn. -- Weigel's Stores Inc. has opened a new, full-service convenience store in Knoxville, Tenn., the retailer's 60th location. The store celebrated its grand opening on June 25, and the celebration runs through July 1.

"We've had many requests from the good folks in West Knoxville, and we're excited to have expanded our presence," said Bill Weigel, chairman and CEO of the Powell, Tenn.-based chain.

The store includes all Weigel's signature products and services, including Bun-on-the-Run breakfast biscuits made from scratch, its proprietary Monkey Ice frozen drinks, fresh-brewed Kona coffee and flavored cappuccinos and Skim D'Lite milk.

The store also features Weigel's no-surcharge ATMs.

"We're all about convenience. And saving our customers money. Waiving the upfront ATM fee is our way of putting money back in our hard-working customers' pockets," said Weigel.

In other company news, Weigel's recently hired Chris Ooten as its new director of real estate to expand the chain's retail footprint through new store site acquisition, and the selling and leasing of company-owned property.

"With a solid background in commercial development, Chris is poised to help expand and take Weigel's to the next level," said Weigel.

Ooten is a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional via the Green Building Certification Institute. and in his new role he will guide new site development, green building design, construction and maintenance solutions. 

His background includes 14 years with Schaad Cos., Knoxville, Tenn., where as COO, he led completion of more than one million square feet of office and commercial projects. His background also includes three years with the Metropolitan Planning Commission of Knoxville and Knox County, and three years as project manager with local civil engineering and design firm, Batson, Himes, Norvell & Poe.
