Spinx Increases Starting Wages to $12 Per Hour

Retailer surveys employees to rank importance of company benefits

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Convenience-store and fuel retailer The Spinx Co. has raised starting wages to $12 per hour for all full-time employees.

Founded in 1972, Spinx operates 82 c-stores and 45 car washes throughout South Carolina, and with approximately 1,500 employees, it is the largest privately-held retailer headquartered in the state.

Spinx is responding to the 2021 hiring crisis many companies are facing by offering a competitive rate, the company said, along with a variety of benefits.

“We’re proud and excited to announce this commitment to enhancing our hourly rates for our valued frontline teammates,” said Stan Storti, president of Greenville, S.C.-based Spinx. “Being an employer of choice has been a significant goal for us at Spinx over the last five years, which means a lot more than pay.”

Every two years, the company survey every teammate and asks them to rank its Total Rewards initiative benefits in order of importance. Then it conducts a followup survey on the top 15, asking teammates to rate how satisfied they are with each one.

“Pay is consistently the No. 1 reason we work, but there are some surprising contenders in the top five,” he said. “Specifically, being treated with respect and dignity has been No. 3 for every survey and almost 90% of our surveyed teammates replied that they feel treated with respect and dignity by their leaders and peers.”

The company, which had reviewed pay rates every six months, recently increased that to  every other month to ensure that its rates are competitive with similar employers, not just gasoline and c-store operators. “This year, we’ve seen starting rates begin to trend higher around June as businesses struggled to find people. We’re deciding to move our rate to $12 per hour, which is well above the average of our top employment competitors and is a significant step toward our goal to be able to start teammates at $15 per hour by 2025,” said Storti.

Spinx is supportive of those working towards employees’ higher education by also offering tuition assistance and scholarship opportunities. They have the opportunity to be reimbursed for numerous expenses related to pursing a degree. Other benefits for Spinx employees include discounts on fuel, profit sharing or other incentive plans.
