ALTOONA, Pa. Sheetz Inc. has won a spot on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For 2019 ranking. The convenience-store retailer has been named on the list five times in the past six years and is the only convenience-store chain that made the cut this year.

The Altoona, Pa.-based company earned the 85th place on the magazine's annual list. Participating organizations are rated based on employee surveys evaluating credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

Sheetz CEO Joe Sheetz said this achievement would not have been possible without the c-store’s team members. “Day in and day out, our company strives to create a place where employees know they are valued and have the opportunity to grow while also instilling a culture of respect and ensuring all employees understand the importance of their job and the role they play in the larger company,” he said.

This month, Sheetz also rolled out a new starting wage. Employees hired within the past six months will earn an additional 50 cents per hour.

“Treating our employees as our most valuable asset is a key value my uncle, Bob Sheetz, instilled when he founded Sheetz in 1952 and is a value we strongly believe in still today,” said Travis Sheetz, president and COO.

When it comes to wages, the retailer hopes to be in the 90th percentile among competitors, according to the Fortune ranking. The company also matches 401(k) contributions up to 4% and covers all dental expenses up to $2,000 each year.

Being a top employer means that workers tend to stick around. About 52% of employees tend to stay more than two years, and 14% stay up to a decade with the company, according to Great Place to Work, which partners with Fortune to create the list.

Sheetz operates 585 stores across Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.

Sheetz is No. 14 in the Top 40 update to CSP’s 2018 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of company-owned retail outlets.
