Rutter's Returns to Shippensburg

Breaks ground on 5,200-sq.-ft. store to open before Labor Day

YORK, Pa. -- After a nearly two-decade absence, Rutter's Farm Stores will return to Shippensburg, Pa., with a new 5,200-sq.-ft. convenience store.

Construction begins today and is expected to be completed by Labor Day, the company said.

Shippensburg is an important part of Rutter's history, said Scott Hartman, president of Rutter's Farm Stores. It's a growing and vibrant market anchored by a great university, and we can't wait to return with a state-of-the-art store.

Rutter's operated a smaller store from 1980 [image-nocss] to 1989 near the site of the new store. The new unit, in Shippensburg Township, Cumberland County, will represent the most current in Rutter's store design, with entrances and gasoline pumps on two sides; 16 fueling positions will dispense gasoline, diesel and kerosene under a canopy. Inside, the store will offer Rutter's proprietary Famous Express Deli and Famous Express Grill, an L-shaped foodservice island with upscale self-serve coffee at one end, seating for 12 to 16 people and a no-surcharge M&T Bank ATM.

The store, which will have approximately 25 employees, will be managed by Bobbie Weyant.

Shippensburg will be the third new Rutter's in 2006. In March, Rutter's opened new stores in Fawn Grove and New Freedom, York County. Family-owned and third generation-managed, York-based Rutter's Farm Stores operates 50 c-stores in York, Adams, Franklin and Lancaster counties.
