Par Pacific Announces Major Strategy Changes

Refiner-marketer promises ‘new and exciting retail experience’

HOUSTON -- The petroleum industry in Hawaii continues to change. In April, private-equity firm One Rock Capital Partners acquired Chevron Corp.'s assets in Hawaii: a refinery, 58 gas stations, four product distribution terminals, pipeline distribution systems and more. Reports indicated that the Chevron fuel flag on the retail sites may be replaced with the Texaco brand.

Now Par Pacific Holdings Inc., the Houston-based company that owns Hawaii’s largest oil refinery and many of the state’s gas stations, has changed the names of its refinery and the parent company of its retail operations, reported Pacific Business News. Along with the name changes, the company is promising that it will launch “a new and exciting retail experience” soon.

Par Pacific has changed the name of its Kapolei refinery in West Oahu to Par Hawaii Refining LLC from Hawaii Independent Energy LLC. The name of the parent company of its retail operations is now Par Hawaii Inc., formerly Kokooha Investments, the parent company of Mid Pac Petroleum LLC. The company will have its headquarters on Oahu, Hawaii.

Par Hawaii’s gasoline and diesel fuels are sold through a network of 128 retail locations on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii islands. Lance Tanaka, a spokesperson for Par Hawaii, told the newspaper that the company will rebrand all of its Tesoro-branded retail locations. It also may rebrand some of its 76-branded locations, he said.

Par Hawaii markets fuels through its retail network and distributes fuels via pipelines on Oahu and barges to all major harbors in the state. Par Hawaii Refining operates the larger of the state’s two petroleum refineries in Kapolei, Oahu. Together, they are the largest supplier of transportation fuels in Hawaii and meet much of the Aloha State’s demand for jet and marine fuels.

This was not the company's first name change. As part of a strategy to expand its refining and marketing operations in Hawaii, Par Petroleum Corp. changed its name to Par Pacific Holdings Inc. in late 2015.

Par Pacific Holdings is a growth-oriented company that manages and maintains interests in energy and infrastructure businesses. It organizes its business into three primary segments of refining, retail and logistics, located in Hawaii.  Also, Par Pacific transports, markets and distributes crude oil from the western United States and Canada to refining hubs in the Midwest, Gulf Coast, East Coast and Hawaii.
