Michigan C-Store Fined Nearly $65,000 for Labor Violations

The retailer failed to comply with overtime requirements

CANTON, Mich. -- Canton Petroleum, a convenience store and gas station in Canton, Mich., owes three workers $64,146 in unpaid wages and liquidated damages after a U.S. Department of Labor investigation found the company violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The c-store did not comply with overtime rules that require employers to pay above the standard wage when staff work more than 40 hours a week, according to the Department’s Wage and Hour Division. Instead, the investigation found that Canton Petroleum would sporadically pay employees $100 in cash for overtime hours, regardless of how many they worked.

Canton Petroleum also failed to post FLSA requirements and keep accurate records of employees’ hours worked, the investigation found.

"Employers must understand their obligations under the law and pay wages accordingly. Failing to pay hard-earned overtime hurts employees and places other employers at a competitive disadvantage," said Timolin Mitchell, Wage and Hour Division district director. "We encourage employers to contact the Wage and Hour Division for assistance, and to make use of the many tools we provide to help them understand the law."
