ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Petroleum Marketers Association of America (PMAA) said it has become aware of a letter being sent to marketers, supposedly from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), asking companies to give permission to have their banks release financial information.
The letter looks official and is accompanied by a release form that asks for the marketer's bank name, contact and account number. Marketers need to be advised that this letter is a fraud, and they should not send out any financial information to the contact number, PMAA said [image-nocss] in a breaking news bulletin to its members.
PMAA said it has contacted DOT about this letter and they have assured us that this is a criminal scheme. The DOT is tracking how many of these letters are being sent out so if any marketer should receive a letter from DOT's Lisa Johnson requesting such information, please fax the letter to PMAA at 703-351-9160, attention to Laura Stewart. PMAA will notify DOT when marketers receive such a fraudulent request.
