3 Chains Earn Top Workplace of 2023 Rankings
By Rachel Gignac on Feb. 03, 2023Three convenience-store chains received recognition for being top national workplaces of 2023: Kwik Trip (No. 24), MAPCO (No. 90) and Delta Sonic (No. 98).
The list, published annually by Energage, an employee survey and research firm, is determined by employee feedback and built on two decades of research, 27 million employee voices and 450 million data points.

Kwik Trip
Kwik Trip, La Crosse, Wisconsin, was featured on the list, taking spot No. 24. It also received the title in 2021.
- Kwik Trip is No. 11 on CSP’s 2022 Top 202 ranking of convenience-store chains by store count.
Kwik Trip, one of the biggest independently held c-store chains in the country, operates more than 800 stores in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin—and soon South Dakota—under the Kwik Trip and Kwik Star banners. It produces more than 80% of the products sold in its stores, supplied by its own bakery, commissary, dairy and distribution center.
Kwik Trip employs more than 34,000 coworkers.
MAPCO
Convenience-store chain MAPCO Express, Franklin, Tennessee, has been named a top workplace of 2023 at No. 90. This is the chain's second year receiving the title.

Delta Sonic
Delta Sonic, Buffalo, New York, took No. 98 on the list.
The c-store chain defines its culture through caring for team members, creating customers for life, embracing change and promoting integrity.
Delta Sonic, with 32 car wash, gas station and c-store locations in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York, Chicago, and Erie, Pennsylvania, employs nearly 3,000 people and operates e c-stores, car washes and auto maintenance facilities.
Stewart’s Shops
In regional awards, three other convenience-store chains were recognized.
Albany Capital District Top Workplaces: Stewart’s Shops, Ballston Spa, New York, Stewart’s Shops began as a family business and is still run by second and third generations of the Dake family. Stewart’s Shops is an essential part of each community they serve offering both strong community ties and company support.

Stewart's Shops has extensive charitable contributions program and, together with the Dake Family, donates $9 million annually to nonprofits. It is one of the largest employers in New York state and is an employee and family-owned business with employees owning over 40% of the company through the ESOP plan. Along with health insurance and paid vacation, ESOP participants are offered paid maternity leave, discounted YMCA gym memberships and daycare, as well as a Make Your Own Scholarship program which provides college scholarships to Partners’ dependents.
OnCue Express
Oklahoma Top Workplaces: The continued growth of OnCue Express, Stillwater, Oklahoma, in the Oklahoma and Texas convenience store market targets 100 new jobs each year. Employment at OnCue combines teamwork, community and advancement in a supportive environment that offers valuable benefits. The company aims for great service to customers and rewarding employment.
