Rutter’s Embraces Wine Opportunities

Two more stores add alcohol options on heels of state law changes

YORK, Pa. -- Two more Rutter’s Farm Store locations began selling wine on April 28.

The Leola, Pa., Rutter’s is the first convenience store in Lancaster County to start selling wine, and the Richland Avenue site in York, Pa., is the second convenience store (after Rutter’s own Newberrytown site) to start wine sales in York County.

The wine-section launches follow a loosening of alcohol-sales regulations in Pennsylvania that have allowed many c-stores to sell beer and wine for the first time, making each rollout an event for the chain.

“We are so excited how quickly we are able to add wine to our beer locations,” said Robert Perkins, vice president of marketing for Rutter's. “We hope and plan to keep this momentum going by adding wine to more stores as we expand the level of convenience for our customers. As the display says, ‘There’s always time for wine.’ ”

Rutter’s wine sections are set up near the c-store chain’s new beer caves and feature an array of brands. The wine stores carry varietals, including cabernet sauvignon, riesling, chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir and others.

In accordance with Pennsylvania Law Act 39, Rutter’s customers can purchase up to 3 liters of wine on any one visit. This equates to four standard bottles (750 mL) or two large bottles (1.5 liters). Sale hours or wine differ from beer. In conformity with Act 39, wine can be sold Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.

With roots dating back to 1747, Rutter’s Farm Stores, York, Pa., owns and operates 65 convenience stores in Pennsylvania.
